I honestly don’t think single straight men and single straight women can be friends with one another. Either,

1.) Man has no interest in Woman. Woman has no interest in Man.
2.) Man has no interest in Woman. Woman develops interest for Man.
3.) Man develops interest in Woman. Woman has no interest in Man.
4.) Man has interest for Woman. Woman has interest for Man.

All things being equal, there is a 1 in 4 chance that there is such a lack of chemistry between the two that romantic feelings never develop in either of them. Scenario 4 may start out good but what happens when the interest with one another wanes? Either the relationship will evolve into “friends with benefits” or the relationship/friendship dissolves altogether. If things remain good however, I guess that’s when people get married, start a family, etc. Once a relationship becomes mutually romantic, I no longer qualify that as friendship. Scenarios 2 and 3 are definitely the most common and these types of friendships are typically what I consider to be fraudulent because one person tends to be preoccupied with making good impressions on the other, often resorting to exaggerating/lying about oneself. So do I think a male/female friendship can exist? I think if both people are in a solid relationship with their boy/girlfriend or they’re gay, then yes.
