Ever wanted to access your itunes library from work or somewhere other than home. With ssh port-forwarding and rendezvous proxy (or network beacon if you’re using Mac OS X), you can.
On your home firewall/router, make sure you have port 22 forwarding to your itunes server. Your itunes server should have an ssh daemon running which should come included in mac os x but you might have to enable it in System Preferences –> Sharing –> Services –> Remote Login since it’s not on by default. From the client itunes machine, you’ll need some kind of ssh tunneling client. I use plink.
plink -L 3689:127.0.0.1:3689 (public ip address of itunes server)
Once you’re connected, test to see it’s working by opening another terminal/command prompt and typing “telnet localhost 3689″ and pressing enter twice. If the tunnel is set up properly, you should see something like:

Install Rendezvous Proxy and add a host specifying 127.0.0.1 for the IP and 3689 as the port and specify whatever host label you want. I tried installing the windows binary version but it didn’t seem to work for me so I ended up installing the Java binary instead. Open up your itunes and you should see the shared library on the left side. That’s it.
I want to do this but I don’t understand word of this, except “That’s it.”
